History of Coronado

Historical Coronado

Modern-day Coronado dates back to 1885. Armed with the vision to create “the grandest hotel on the Pacific Coast” set in a complete, planned community, Elisha Babcock and Hampton Story purchased an area that spanned Coronado, North Island and the Silver Strand for just $110,000. Their vision came to fruition, as the Hotel del Coronado became the coast’s largest and grandest. Coronado continued to grow on many fronts, including aviation innovation, with help from the weather and remote location. Coronado is now unique and world famous, playing host to everyone from presidents, kings and Hollywood celebrities.

Aviation History

Starting in 1911, famed aviator Glenn Curtiss used North Island to test and experiment with his seaplane. For 3 years, he was able to utilize the Island, at no charge, to create the world’s first seaplane. With the help of the U.S. Navy, the first aircraft squadron was created. This made Naval Air Station North Island the “Birthplace of Naval Aviation.”

Timeline of Coronado’s Significant Events

With so much history, it’s important to recognize some of the most significant events in Coronado’s rich past. Starting in 1855, Coronado peninsula was purchased by Elisha Babcock, Jr. and Hampton Story. The very first topographical map of Coronado was created in 1857, determining the total area to be 4,185.46 acres. Just 9 years later, in 1866, the official map of Coronado was recorded and the first lot sale took place on November 13. The “Hotel Del” or the Hotel del Coronado broke ground in 1887, which only took 11 months to complete. The opening of the infamous “Tent City” sets records as 10,000 people arrive in 1914. Another aviation breakthrough in 1927 occurred when Charles A. Lindbergh leaves North Island, headed for New York, to start the first transatlantic flight to Paris. These are just some of the many historical highlights that helped Coronado become what it is today.
